What should a small business website cost?
Three real price brackets, and how to tell which one your business actually needs.
Squarespace suits most small businesses that want to build it themselves — good results with the least effort. WordPress suits you if you need specific plugins or expect to grow into something complex. Wix gives the most layout freedom but is the easiest to make a mess with. All three are legitimate choices.
| Squarespace | WordPress | Wix | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Easiest | Hardest | Easy but fiddly |
| Monthly cost | $16–$49 | $10–$25 hosting | $17–$45 |
| Design quality out of the box | High | Depends on theme | Variable |
| Flexibility | Moderate | Unlimited | High for layout |
| Maintenance needed | None | Regular | None |
| Finding help later | Moderate | Easiest | Moderate |
| Moving away later | Difficult | Easiest | Difficult |
All three are capable. WordPress has more control for advanced work, but for a small business site the platform is rarely the limiting factor — content and your Google Business Profile matter far more.
Yes, but it means rebuilding the design. Content can usually be exported. WordPress is the easiest to leave; the hosted builders are hardest.
The software is free; hosting, a theme and some plugins are not. Expect $10 to $30 a month all in, which is similar to the builders.
If you are selling products online as a main activity, Shopify is better than all three. If you sell occasionally, a builder with basic shop features is usually enough.
