Internal linking: the topic cluster model and how to actually build one
Internal linking is the one ranking factor you fully control. Most sites still link almost entirely from the navigation.
Topical authority is the degree to which search and AI systems associate your site with comprehensive, credible coverage of a subject. It is built by covering a topic's genuine sub-areas in depth, linking them coherently, using consistent terminology, and demonstrating first-hand expertise — not by publishing a target number of articles.
It is the association between your site and a subject, built from the depth, breadth, internal coherence and credibility of your coverage. It is not a metric a search engine publishes, and it is not something you can claim — it is inferred from what you have produced.

└── Lab vs field data (measurement)Enough to cover the topic's real sub-areas — usually eight to fifteen substantial pieces for a defined subject, not a fixed quota.
The number matters less than the completeness. If a reader can arrive knowing nothing and leave able to act, the coverage is sufficient. If there is an obvious question your cluster does not address, it is not — regardless of the article count.
The timeline is months, not weeks. Topical authority is the slowest-compounding and longest-lasting investment in content — which is precisely why most sites abandon it before it starts working.
One deeply first. A site with genuine authority in one subject outperforms one with shallow coverage of five, and the depth makes the next topic easier to establish.
A comprehensive overview page helps as a hub for internal linking and for broad queries. The cluster pages are where the depth lives, and they do most of the ranking.
Volume is not the metric. Cover the sub-topics they cover superficially with genuine depth and original material, and you compete on the axis that actually matters.

Search engines stopped matching strings a long time ago. They match things — and if they cannot tell which thing you are, nothing else helps.
Google does not penalise AI content. It penalises content produced at scale primarily to manipulate rankings — which is what most AI content is.
